In this blog, we will discuss the day declared by United Nations i.e. World Population Day.

§  About the Day: World Population Day 2019 is observed on July 11 all over the world. The day aims to gain attention on the importance and urgency of issues relating to population. World Population Day was established / introduced by United Nations Development Programme in the year 1989. While you may not have heard much about world population day, but it has been celebrated for nearly three decades now.

§  Purpose of this Day: The day aims to increase awareness about the need to find resolutions to issues relating to population due to its growing. Inspiration for this day is achieved from the interest that was raised by "Five Billion Day" on July 11, 1987. On this day, the world in toto reached the count of 5 billion.

§  Theme and significance of this Day: The most important aim behind having a day dedicated to this issue (World Population Day) is to emphasis attention on consequence of population issues and reasons why it affects overall development programs and plans.

§  This year’s theme: UN Council decides the theme of World Population Day every year, but in 2019 specific theme is not decided and calls for global attention to the unfinished business of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development. The conference held 25 (twenty five) years back where 179 country’s governments recognised that reproductive health and gender equality are important for achieving sustainable development. To achieve these unmet goals, in the month of November, UNFPA along with the governments of Kenya and Denmark will be convening a high-level conference in Nairobi to accelerate the hard work.

§  Threat that is caused by high population: The greatest threat that growing population causes is the quick depletion of natural resources and the threat that it poses to sustainability of resources. However, apart from this issue, World Population Day should also be seen at as an opportunity to celebrate the spirit of brotherhood. On this day, you must realise your responsibility towards one another.

§  The celebration of this in the world: World Population Day is celebrated in a different way in different countries. Most of United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) County Offices celebrates the day with various competitions for poster making and essay writing and sports concerts to spread awareness to the cause. In 2011, the population of the world crossed 7 billion mark. On this occasion, the UNFPA and its partners launched 7 billion actions aimed at involving people, spurring commitments and sparking actions related to the opportunities and challenges presented by a world of 7 billion people.

§  Awareness through this day: Through there is a great awareness celebration, people are encouraged to take initiative in the event to know about various population issues like “importance of family planning towards the increasing population, gender equality, maternal and baby health, poverty, human rights, right to health, sexuality education, use of contraceptives and safety measures like condoms, reproductive health, adolescent pregnancy, girl child education, child marriage, sexually transmitted infections” and so many.
