Liability To Pay Replacement Cost - Rented House

I am living as tenant in a apartment since Jan-2019. Recently western toilet sheet broken while using. I informed owner regarding this. He said that I need to get it fixed and bear all the expenses. Since it's a 1 BHK and we do not have any other option, I go ahead and get it fixed which coste around 22K. Just want to understand from the rental agreement perspective that who is liable to pay the amount in such cases I. E. Owner or Tenant?

Hello. You need to read the rent agreement executed by both of you and what it states about the repairs and maintenance of the flat premise. Generally it is the tenant who has to repair it and in your case as you are in the occupation of the said flat for more than a year, it will be implied that the sheet broke while you were using it and hence you will have to bear the expenses. In this case we can say that you did the right thing by getting it repaired.
