When the officer in charge of a police station has reason to suspect the commission of a cognizable offence, the investigation can start. The investigation of a non-cognizable case can be started only when there is an order of a competent Magistrate. The police officer has to make an investigation of a cognizable offence when an order is passed by a competent Magistrate under section 156(3) of CrPc.
